Gento Lake, Glacial lake system in La Torre de Cabdella, Spain
Gento Lake is a glacial body of water in the Spanish Pyrenees near La Torre de Cabdella that stretches approximately 812 meters long and 440 meters wide. Sitting at about 2,141 meters (7,025 feet) elevation, it forms part of a larger hydroelectric infrastructure system.
Construction of the hydroelectric infrastructure began between 1911 and 1914, making it the first major power generation project in Catalonia. This pioneering work transformed the valley and brought modern electricity production to the mountain region.
The museum at Cabdella tells the story of how local people harnessed water power to shape modern life in this mountain region starting in the early 1900s. Visitors can see how the constructed water system became central to the area's identity and development.
You can reach the lake via the converted Carrilet railway track or take the cable car service that runs from July through September. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and be prepared for sudden weather changes at this high elevation.
The lake connects underground through tunnels to 26 other bodies of water, creating an extensive hidden network for power generation. These invisible waterways beneath the mountains move water across great distances to feed multiple power stations.
