Lagunas de Puebla de Beleña, Natural lagoons in Guadalajara Province, Spain.
Lagunas de Puebla de Beleña consists of two seasonal lagoons, Grande and Chica, situated in a protected natural reserve at the foothills of the Sierra de Ayllón. The site features reed beds, shallow waters, and surrounding vegetation of willows and poplars mixed with grassland.
The lagoons originated from an ancient drainage network linked to the Jarama River, creating endorheic basins in an area with clay deposits of low permeability. This geological foundation continues to shape the water cycle and habitat composition today.
These shallow waters serve as a crucial rest stop for migratory birds traveling across Europe in spring and autumn. Cranes, herons, and storks pause here to feed and gather strength before continuing their long journeys.
Two marked trails under five kilometers in length connect the parking area to bird observation points strategically positioned around the lagoons. Spring and autumn offer the best visiting conditions, when migratory birds are most abundant and trail conditions remain manageable.
The water bodies alternate between complete drying and flooding in a natural cycle, conditions that create opportunities for specialized aquatic plants to flourish. This extreme fluctuation makes the area particularly valuable for understanding how ecosystems adapt to changing water levels.
