Liverpool Telescope, Robotic telescope at Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, Spain
The Liverpool Telescope is a robotic reflecting telescope with a 2 meter (6 ft 6 in) mirror positioned at 2,363 meters (7,753 ft) elevation on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands. It sits within the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory complex and operates entirely under automatic control.
The telescope began operating in 2004 following years of development and construction. Its launch marked a turning point in automated astronomical observation at the facility.
Researchers from many countries share access to this telescope and contribute to joint astronomical projects. This collaboration allows rapid and coordinated observation of celestial events.
The site sits in an area with very low light pollution and stable atmospheric conditions, enabling optimal observations. The high elevation and clear air make the location ideal for precise astronomical measurements.
The telescope can quickly respond to unexpected celestial events, redirecting itself to new targets within seconds. This capability makes it especially valuable for observing short-lived phenomena like gamma-ray bursts.
