Castell de Maús, Medieval castle in Suera, Spain

Castell de Maús is a medieval fortress built at about 582 meters elevation on Suera Alta hill, with surviving defensive walls and the remains of a central tower structure. The site preserves sections of the original fortification that once protected the area.

The fortress was built during the 12th century under Islamic rule and protected multiple Muslim settlements that eventually became part of present-day Sueras. It served as a key defensive position during the period of territorial change in medieval eastern Spain.

The ruins show how different societies shaped the construction over time, visible in the varied building styles across the site. Walking through, you notice how the fortress reflects the layers of people who lived in this region.

From Sueras town center, head toward the Ayódar road and take the left path before crossing the river at the town exit to reach the site. The walk uphill offers views of the surrounding countryside as you approach the remains.

The ruins stand at a high point overlooking the Sierra de Espadán mountains, a location that allowed defenders to spot danger from far away. This elevated position made it an effective lookout post for the entire region.
