Karakate

Karakate is a mountain summit in the Irukurutzeta Range, rising to 749 meters in northern Gipuzkoa. The peak sits within a chain of mountains that characterize this corner of the Basque region.

Archaeological digs in 2016 uncovered remnants of a Roman military camp at the summit, complete with defensive structures. These findings indicate the strategic importance of this location in ancient times.

The mountain, also known as Muneta or Kortazar, holds significance in Basque territorial heritage as part of the traditional mountain network of Gipuzkoa.

Multiple marked hiking trails reach the summit from different starting locations across the area. The routes are well-marked and guide visitors through the natural landscape.

On clear days, the summit offers views across to both Eibar and Elgoibar towns in the surrounding valleys. This vantage point makes it a favorite spot for hikers seeking a wider perspective of the region.
