Sede de la Gran Peña, Community center on Gran Vía, Madrid, Spain.
Sede de la Gran Peña is a corner building in central Madrid, standing at the junction of Gran Vía and Carrera de San Jerónimo. The facade is built in an eclectic style and features detailed stone carvings, while the interior holds both club rooms and residential apartments.
The building was designed by Eduardo Gambra Sanz and completed around 1916, at a time when Madrid was actively reshaping its urban center. The Gran Vía was being opened as a new major avenue during those years, and many of the buildings along it, including this one, were conceived as part of that transformation.
La Gran Peña is a private gentlemen's club, and access is reserved for members only. Passersby can still take in the ornate stonework on the facade, which gives a sense of the social ambitions the club projected when it was built.
The building stands at one of the busiest intersections in Madrid and is easy to reach on foot from several nearby metro stations. The exterior can be viewed from the street at any time, but the interior is not open to the general public.
Although the building now stands on one of Madrid's most recognized streets, the Gran Vía was still an unfinished construction site when the building was completed. The club moved into its home before the avenue itself was fully built.
