Palau Marc

Palau Marc is a neoclassical palace with a symmetrical stone facade that features large windows arranged in classical proportions, blending seamlessly into the Gothic Quarter. The building has multiple stories, with the principal rooms emphasized by the distinctive horizontal divisions across the front.

Construction began in 1898 under the direction of French architect Henri Grandpierre, who selected stone materials from the Montgrí region. The palace emerged during a period when Barcelona was modernizing its urban identity and combining neoclassical design with urban expansion.

The building now serves as headquarters for the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya, contributing to regional cultural development.

A visitor information center within the building provides details about local attractions and cultural events in the area. The location sits in the heart of the old city and is easy to reach, with good access to surrounding historic neighborhoods.

Inside, a monumental staircase made of Carrara marble ascends to the main floor through three wide sections of solid steps. This impressive detail reveals the craftsmanship and effort invested in shaping the interior spaces.
