Plaza Moyúa, Central plaza in Abando district, Bilbao, Spain
Plaza Moyúa is an elliptical plaza in central Bilbao featuring symmetrical gardens with flower beds, manicured lawns, and a central fountain at its heart. Several radiating paths cross the space and connect to surrounding streets and neighborhoods.
The plaza was created in 1876 as a central meeting point between main streets. It underwent major redesign in the 1940s under architect Jose Luis Salinas.
The plaza was named after Federico Moyúa, a former mayor who shaped Bilbao's growth and urban planning. Visitors can see how locals use the space as a meeting point, sitting on benches while enjoying the maintained gardens.
The plaza sits directly above metro stations on Lines 1 and 2 and is easily accessible by public transport. Visitors can find benches and shaded spots to sit, with several bus stops located nearby.
The 1997 renovation preserved the original fountain while adding modern steel lampposts and adapting to metro infrastructure construction. This adaptation shows how the plaza grows with the modern city while keeping its historic elements intact.
