Casas de Sota

Casas de Sota is a large residential building in Bilbao featuring stone facades, wrought iron balconies, arched galleries, and decorative towers rising above a broad roofline. The complex spans three street fronts and now houses apartments, offices, and shops on the ground level.

The complex was designed in 1919 by architect Manuel María Smith for businessman Ramón de la Sota during Bilbao's period of rapid urban growth. This project emerged from the city's ambitious expansion plans of that era.

The structure reflects the tastes and architectural preferences of Bilbao's wealthy class during the early 1900s, when regionalist design became the standard for important homes. You can see this influence in every ornamental detail, from the wrought iron work to the decorative towers.

The building sits near Moyúa metro station in a central location that is easy to reach on foot. Visitors can view the exterior facades and architectural details from the street.

The original design was far more ambitious than what was built, intended to occupy an entire city block with private gardens and an interior courtyard. This scale made it one of the largest residential plans attempted during that period.
