Parque Hernández, Public park in central Melilla, Spain.
Parque Hernández is a green space in central Melilla with walking paths, ornamental gardens, fountains, and recreational areas laid out in a trapezoidal shape. The site combines planted areas with distinct zones for rest and activity throughout.
This space was created around 1900 when a former military training field and waste ground were transformed into an urban forest area. This change reshaped how a central piece of land was used and experienced.
The entrance gates display Melilla's coat of arms and the figure of Guzmán el Bueno, reflecting the city's connection to Spanish heritage. Visitors see these symbols immediately upon entering and gain insight into what the city values and remembers.
The park is located near Plaza de España in the Modernist Extension district and provides benches, children's play areas, and shaded spots throughout. Multiple entrances allow you to access it easily from different directions.
The site gained formal recognition as a historical garden, highlighting its importance beyond daily recreation. This official acknowledgment shows how the creation of green spaces shaped the city's development.
