Ahuehuete del Parterre, Protected ancient tree in El Retiro Park, Madrid, Spain

The Ahuehuete tree stands 40 meters tall with spreading branches and seasonal foliage near the Felipe IV gate of El Retiro Park.

The tree survived the French invasion during the Spanish Independence War, as artillery forces used its branches to support their equipment in the early 1800s.

This Mexican Montezuma cypress represents the connection between Spanish and Mexican botanical heritage, as this species serves as Mexico's national tree.

Visitors can find this protected specimen in the French-style Parterre garden section, entering through the Alfonso XII street entrance of El Retiro Park.

The tree remains the only specimen of Taxodium mucronatum in El Retiro Park and received special protection status from Madrid's regional government.
