Iglesia de San Cayetano del antiguo Convento de San José, Baroque church in Santa Marina district, Córdoba, Spain.
The Iglesia de San Cayetano is a Baroque church featuring a Latin cross layout, a dome, and vaulted ceilings decorated with frescoes. Two bell towers stand on the facade and give the building its distinctive appearance.
Construction of the building began in 1638 under stonemason Andrés Gutiérrez and was completed in 1656. Further renovations during the 18th century adapted the structure to changing tastes.
The main altar displays Saint Joseph with Saint Elijah and Saint John of the Cross, while side chapels house religious sculptures. These works reflect the Baroque faith that visitors experience when walking through the interior.
The building is located on Avenida Ollerías in an easily accessible area. Visitors should know that services and processions occur regularly and the interior may not be freely accessible during these times.
The attached convent served as a prison from 1938 to 1939 during the Spanish Civil War, holding over one thousand republican prisoners. This difficult history remains largely unknown today, even though it shaped the place's past.
