Christ of the Lanterns, Religious sculpture in Plaza de los Capuchinos, Córdoba, Spain
Christ of the Lanterns is a white stone sculpture standing on a black cross with an octagonal stone base in a cobblestone square, surrounded by eight lanterns. These lanterns form a geometric arrangement around the central figure that defines the character of the entire plaza.
Juan Navarro León created this sculpture in 1794 under commission from a Capuchin friar, with backing from wealthy patrons. The work came about during a period when religious artworks were being renewed throughout Córdoba's churches and public spaces.
The sculpture serves as a gathering point during Holy Week processions, when different brotherhoods pass through to mark the religious season. Local residents connect the square to these yearly ceremonial traditions.
The plaza is located in the historic center and easily reached by most bus lines, or on foot from other central locations. A visit is free at any time, though it is worth timing a visit during Holy Week when processions take place.
The eight lanterns represent the eight provinces of Andalusia, creating a symbolic link between this plaza in Córdoba and the broader region. This connection makes it an artwork that extends beyond its local setting.
