Mount Alayta, Shield volcano in Kilbet Rasu, Ethiopia.
Mount Alayta extends across 2,700 square kilometers of land, featuring gentle slopes formed by basaltic lava flows near Lake Afrera.
The volcano recorded its most recent eruption in 1915, while a significant lava flow occurred between June and August 1907 from its north-south fissures.
Local Ethiopian communities monitor the mountain's fumaroles on the southern side, which serve as natural indicators of the volcano's current state.
Visitors require specialized geological permits and experienced guides to explore the volcanic complex due to its remote location in the Afar Region.
The mountain contains a chain of younger craters aligned along a north-northwest axis, extending toward the western flank of Mount Afdera.
