Manda Hararo

Manda Hararo spans 105 kilometers by 25 kilometers across western Afar, with basalt formations rising to an elevation of 600 meters.

Satellite observations in August 2007 detected the first recorded volcanic activity at Manda Hararo, revealing substantial sulfur dioxide emissions and lava flows.

The mountain forms part of the Great Rift Valley system, which has influenced the development of settlements and communities throughout Eastern Africa.

Scientists monitor the volcano's fissures and flanks for eruption indicators, as lava emerges from multiple points rather than a central crater.

The complex contains multiple shield volcanoes formed by successive lava flows that solidified into broad, flat structures across the landscape.
