Manda Hararo

Manda Hararo is a volcanic mountain complex in Awsi Rasu, Ethiopia, built from basalt rock and shaped by successive flows of lava. The terrain features several broad, gently sloping volcanic cones that have grown through repeated eruptions over time.

Satellite observations first recorded volcanic activity in 2007, detecting sulfur dioxide emissions and lava flows from the mountain. This discovery revealed that despite its ancient basaltic foundation, the system remains geologically active today.

The mountain forms part of the Great Rift Valley system, which has influenced the development of settlements and communities throughout Eastern Africa.

This remote location requires careful planning and local guidance for a visit. Travelers should prepare for highland conditions and bring proper equipment suited to the rough terrain and volcanic landscape.
