Mount Dama Ali

Mount Dama Ali is a shield volcano in the Awsi Rasu region near Lake Abbe on the Ethiopian-Djibouti border. The landscape consists of various rock types including basalt and trachyte that divide the terrain into different layers and formations.

The area experienced its last volcanic eruption in February 1631, which permanently shaped the landscape. This eruption marks one of the most significant volcanic events in the natural history of this region.

Local Ethiopian communities maintain traditional practices and knowledge regarding the mountain's geological features, particularly regarding volcanic activities and natural resources.

The mountain lies in a remote area near Lake Abbe and is best accessed from Djibouti. The way leads through rough volcanic terrain, so sturdy footwear and plenty of water are essential for any visit.

The volcano sits directly next to Lake Abbe, one of Africa's hottest and saltiest lakes, creating a rare connection between volcanic formations and an extreme water landscape. This combination makes the place a remarkable display of nature.
