Rimbaud House, Literary museum in Harar, Ethiopia

Rimbaud House is a restored merchant residence in Harar that now functions as a museum dedicated to the French poet Arthur Rimbaud. The rooms display photographs, personal items, and documents from his years living and trading in Ethiopia.

French poet Arthur Rimbaud arrived in Harar in 1880 and abandoned writing to pursue commerce instead. His stay there lasted about eleven years and transformed his identity in ways far removed from his earlier literary career.

The house shows how a European figure lived and worked within an Ethiopian city during the 19th century. Visitors can observe how Rimbaud's presence connected with the local community and daily life.

The museum is easily accessible on foot in Harar's old city and sits centrally located. Visitors should allow time to browse the exhibitions and view displays, while also having the option to purchase locally made crafts.

The house contains photographs that Rimbaud himself took while living there and working as a merchant. These images are quite rare and offer a personal view into his life beyond poetry.
