Ardoukoba, Fissure vent volcano in Tadjourah Region, Djibouti
Ardoukoba is a fissure vent volcano on the coast of Tadjourah Region in Djibouti. The mountain rises about 298 meters above sea level and consists of dark basaltic rock formed by successive volcanic events.
The volcano lay dormant for thousands of years before erupting in November 1978 following a series of small earthquakes in the surrounding area. This eruption was the most recent activity recorded at the site.
The volcano bears different names across languages, reflecting its position between the Danakil block and Afar depression within the Great Rift Valley system.
Visiting this volcano requires preparation for remote coastal terrain with minimal facilities in the area. Bringing a guide is recommended to navigate safely and understand the geological features you encounter.
The 1978 eruption produced enormous volumes of fluid basaltic lava that created deep cracks and multiple cinder cones across the landscape. These features remain visible today as dramatic evidence of that recent volcanic event.
