Armentières is a French commune in the Nord region, located approximately 14 kilometers north of Lille near the Belgian border. The town sits in a flat landscape and forms part of the Lille metropolitan area.
During World War I, German forces deployed mustard gas in Armentières in 1918, leading to British troop evacuation. The town later received the Croix de guerre in recognition of its suffering during the conflict.
