Merderet, River in Normandy, France
The Merderet is a river running approximately 36 kilometers across the Cotentin peninsula in Normandy. It flows from Valognes down to where it joins the Douve near Beuzeville-la-Bastille.
The river became a critical point during the 1944 invasion when the 82nd Airborne Division operated in the area. Several bridges across it were targets of military operations aimed at holding key positions.
Near La Fière bridge, a monument honors American paratroopers who fought here during World War II. The site serves as a place where visitors can reflect on the soldiers' experiences in this region.
The river is easily accessible from nearby roads, particularly around the bridges, allowing for walking exploration of the surroundings. Spring and summer are ideal times to visit when water levels are manageable and paths are clear.
Before the invasion, German forces deliberately flooded the surrounding marshland to block military advances. This flooding fundamentally changed how troops moved through the region during the fighting.
