Décines-Charpieu is a commune located east of Lyon within the metropolitan area. The territory is crossed by the Canal de Jonage and bordered by the Grand-Large reservoir.

The commune originally belonged to the Isère department until it transferred to Rhône in 1968. This administrative change reshaped the area's connection to Lyon.
