Hôtel Amelot de Bisseuil, Private mansion in Quartier Saint-Gervais, France
The Hôtel Amelot de Bisseuil is a baroque private mansion on Rue Vieille-du-Temple featuring two distinct courtyards with ornately decorated facades. Sculptural elements adorn the exterior walls, creating a composition of classical references and artistic detail.
The residence was designed by architect Pierre Cottard between 1657 and 1660 for Denis Amelot de Chaillou, replacing an older noble residence. Its construction marked an important moment in the development of this quarter of Paris.
The interior rooms display 18th-century decorations and a gallery dedicated to Psyche with artistic refinement throughout. The spaces reflect the tastes of those who once called this place home.
The mansion sits in the 4th arrondissement and is recognizable from the street with its distinctive baroque decoration. The outer courtyard can sometimes be viewed from the entrance, depending on current access restrictions.
The famous playwright Beaumarchais composed one of his most celebrated works while living here. Later, the building found new purpose as the home of a private foundation devoted to supporting the arts.
