Maison Folie de Wazemmes, Cultural center in Wazemmes district, Lille, France
The Maison Folie de Wazemmes is a cultural center housed in a converted textile factory in Lille, featuring exhibition galleries, performance spaces, and a modern extension clad in metal. Inside, an internal street system connects the different areas of the complex throughout the space.
The center was established in 2004 when Lille was the European Capital of Culture, transforming an old textile factory into a multipurpose venue. This conversion was part of a broader urban renewal project that honored the neighborhood's industrial heritage.
The venue hosts dance, theater, concerts, and art workshops that bring together people from the neighborhood through shared artistic experiences. The programs reflect the diverse interests and creative energy of the local community.
The center is easily accessible by public transport and located on rue des Sarrazins in the Wazemmes neighborhood. Visitors should check the opening hours in advance, as times vary throughout the week and weekends may have limited availability.
Dutch architect Lars Spuybroek designed the renovation and created an innovative internal pathway system connecting the two main buildings. This design approach honors the building's industrial past while creating unexpected routes for visitors to explore.
