Chapelle du Rouet, chapel located in Bouches-du-Rhône, in France
Chapelle du Rouet is a small chapel on the coast of Carry-le-Rouet, built with simple stone walls and a modest roof. It sits on a rocky point jutting into the sea, offering views of the bay and passing vessels.
The chapel was built in 1653 and has stood at this location for centuries. After a fire or damage, it was rebuilt in 1877 and retained its historical character.
The chapel is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and carries the name Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption. Each year on September 8th, locals and visitors gather here to celebrate Mary's nativity and receive a blessing for fishermen and their boats.
Access is free and paths are easy to find. The best visiting times are early mornings or late afternoons, when it is quiet and light reflects beautifully on the water.
The chapel was once a lookout point for sailors and fishermen. Today it also serves as a starting point for the Sentier des Douaniers, a trail that runs along the coast past several coves and beaches.
