La Filature, National theater in Mulhouse, France
La Filature is a modern cultural center in Mulhouse with a distinctive glass shell structure that houses a main theater with around 1,200 seats and one of Europe's largest performance stages. The building combines several specialized rooms under one roof to accommodate different art forms and event types.
Architect Claude Vasconi designed this cultural center on the site of a former cotton mill and opened it in 1993. The transformation of an industrial site into an arts venue shaped the building's identity from the start.
The building is home to the Chamber Orchestra of Mulhouse and hosts a specialized media library dedicated to performing arts. Visitors can experience the daily work of these groups and connect with the ensembles during their performances.
The venue offers theater, dance, concerts, and art exhibitions throughout the year across multiple performance spaces of different sizes. Visitors should note that offerings vary between event types and it is wise to check ahead about what is scheduled.
The building features two additional specialized rooms - one with 364 seats for flexible productions and one with 98 seats equipped with projection technology. These smaller spaces allow for innovative formats that would not be possible in the main hall.
