House of Pierre Loti, House museum in Rochefort, France
The House of Pierre Loti is a two-story residence in Rochefort decorated with objects from his naval journeys around the world. Multiple themed rooms display the items the former naval officer and writer collected throughout his career.
The 17th-century building was transformed by naval officer and writer Julien Viaud, known as Pierre Loti, who lived there until 1923. During his time at the house, he filled the rooms with objects brought back from his naval expeditions to exotic locations.
The rooms reflect different cultures: a Turkish lounge, an Arabic room, a Chinese room, and a Japanese pagoda show how the owner filled his home with memories from his travels. These spaces reveal how he wove his experiences from distant lands into his daily life.
The building itself has been closed for renovations since 2012, but visitors can experience a detailed 3D virtual tour at the Hebre Museum. This alternative allows people to explore the rooms and collections even while renovation work continues.
The garden surrounding the house contains a family stele that was relocated from Rochefort cemetery and received protected monument status in 1990. This memorial stone is an overlooked element that connects the owner's personal history to the place itself.
