Arsenal de Rochefort

The Arsenal de Rochefort is a former naval complex along the Charente River, featuring extensive fortifications and stone buildings arranged across a substantial site. The layout includes workshops, warehouses, and administrative structures that show how such a military installation operated and was organized.

The arsenal was founded in 1665 and served for centuries as a major French naval center. Its operations ended in the early 1900s as naval technology and military needs transformed.

The National Marine Museum within the Arsenal complex presents collections of maritime artifacts, naval equipment, and historical documents from French naval operations.

You can explore parts of the site on foot and visit various buildings, with some areas available for guided tours. Wear comfortable shoes since the grounds are large and there is much to see throughout.
