Église Saint-Pierre de Mérens-d'En-Haut, Romanesque church in Mérens-les-Vals, France.
Église Saint-Pierre de Mérens-d'En-Haut is a Romanesque church located in Mérens-les-Vals in the French Pyrenees. It features a square bell tower with three levels, decorated with double openings on each side in Catalan-Andorran style.
The church was given to the abbots of Sainte-Marie de Lagrasse in 994 by local lords and received papal confirmation in 1118. This transfer placed it within an important monastic network that extended through the mountain regions.
The church displays construction methods typical of tenth-century religious buildings in the Ariège region, with its distinctive three-lobed floor plan. The style reflects how local communities built their places of worship in these southern mountain valleys.
The building sits at 1153 meters elevation along Route de Vives and is reachable via the D332 road above the Nabre stream. The location on this mountain road offers easy access, though the terrain is steep and winding.
In October 1811, Spanish Miquelets under General Villamil set fire to both the church and village during the Peninsular War. This attack left marks on local memory and marked a turbulent period in the region's history.
