Goutaroux, Mountain summit in Vercors Massif, France
Goutaroux is a mountain summit in the Vercors Massif rising to 1229 meters and characterized by limestone cliffs and rocky ridges. The slopes display typical Alpine features with meadows and exposed stone formations.
The mountain was developed in the 19th century by shepherds who created routes to higher pastures, establishing the foundation for today's walking paths. These early routes continue to connect surrounding valleys to the summit.
Local farmers maintain traditional grazing practices on Goutaroux's slopes, contributing to the preservation of Alpine meadows and regional agricultural methods.
The summit is best accessed from Trézanne hamlet, where a marked trail with yellow and green blazes begins and leads to the peak. The ascent requires a full day of hiking with sturdy shoes and plenty of water.
In winter the northern slope retains snow coverage longer than surrounding peaks due to the mountain's specific geological orientation. This characteristic makes it a different destination during the colder months.
