Chabrières, Mountain summit in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France
Chabrières is a mountain summit in the French Alps rising to about 2700 meters. From the top, hikers can see across the surrounding mountains and valleys of Hautes-Alpes.
A lift system was built in the 1980s to transport winter sports enthusiasts up the mountain. The facility was later closed, and the site developed into a destination for hikers and nature lovers.
The place takes its name from a family with deep roots in the region. Herders still use these heights for their flocks, and visitors can observe their daily mountain work.
The mountain is accessible on foot, but the road can be blocked during winter months. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and start early to return before dark.
On the hike, you can see the Lac de Serre-Ponçon, a large reservoir that lies like an inland sea in the mountains. The view of this lake from higher elevations is especially striking on clear days.
