Le Petit Rateau, Mountain summit in Hautes-Alpes, France
Le Petit Rateau is a mountain summit in the French Alps with steep slopes and a distinctive north face that overlooks La Grave and the Romanche valley below. The terrain features a combination of snow fields, rock, and ridges that create varied climbing conditions across different aspects.
The first documented ascent took place on July 11, 1873, when mountaineer Christian Almer led an expedition to the summit. This early climb marked the beginning of the mountain's record in mountaineering during the height of Alpine exploration.
The name comes from the French word for rake, referring to the mountain's distinctive ridge that extends from west to east across the landscape.
The climb begins from La Selle hut at approximately 2,672 meters (8,766 feet) and takes around five hours to reach the summit. Visitors should have solid mountaineering experience and appropriate gear, as conditions can change quickly at this elevation.
The north and south faces present entirely different climbing challenges, with the south side offering moderate snow routes and the north face requiring technical rock climbing. This variety attracts mountaineers of different skill levels seeking different types of alpine experiences.
