Pointe de l'Observatoire, Mountain summit in Vanoise National Park, France.
Pointe de l'Observatoire is a mountain peak rising to about 3,000 meters between Aussois and Pralognan-la-Vanoise in the French Alps. The ridge offers views across the Vanoise massif and the surrounding valleys below.
The peak gained prominence when Vanoise National Park was established in 1963, making the region accessible to mountaineers. This period marked the start of organized mountain exploration in the massif.
The nearby villages shape the mountain landscape through their way of life and seasonal rhythms tied to Alpine nature. Local people have adapted their traditions to the patterns of the year in these high valleys.
Several hiking trails reach the summit, starting from either Aussois or Pralognan-la-Vanoise and offering different difficulty levels. The best time to visit is from June to September when snow has melted and the paths are most accessible.
From this vantage point, visitors can spot ibexes and bearded vultures in their natural setting, offering rare moments of wildlife observation. These animals are typical of the Vanoise area and represent the return of Alpine species after their disappearance.
