Fort de Montbré, Military fortification in Taissy, France.
Fort de Montbré is a five-sided fortification built at 180 meters elevation, constructed from brick and earth with raised firing positions for effective defense. The structure contains two powder magazines for ammunition storage, a bakery oven for food production, and a well to supply water to the garrison.
Construction began in October 1877 and was completed in 1879 as part of a defensive ring around Reims following military reforms of 1870. It was built in response to changing security concerns in Europe and designed to protect the region from potential threats.
The name refers to the Mont Thibé hill where it stands, dominating the surrounding landscape from its elevated position. The fort reflects French confidence in fortified defenses as protection against potential threats from the north.
The location sits on a hilltop and requires some effort to climb, but the elevated position offers good views of the surrounding area. Wear comfortable shoes and prepare for changing weather, as the height exposes the site more directly to wind and elements.
The association Rèmes Brigade maintains the fort grounds today and has preserved traces of historical training exercises on the site. Remnants of training courses can still be found in the ditches surrounding the fort, offering insight into military life.
