Cascades du Flumen, Triple waterfall in Septmoncel Les Molunes, France.
The Flumen waterfalls consist of three tiered cascades that drop over 20 meters through a narrow limestone gorge in the Jura mountains. The water flows from one level to the next, creating pools and misty spray between the rocks along its course.
The waterfalls were carved by the Flumen River over thousands of years as it gradually eroded the limestone of the Jura mountains. A formal walking path was created in the early 20th century to make these falls accessible to visitors.
The Flumen waterfalls represent a natural heritage site of national interest, illustrating the geological formations of the Jura mountain range.
The site is reached via a well-marked walking trail of about 3 kilometers starting from the Le Matinete parking area. The path follows the river and requires steady footing, especially when wet from recent rain or mist.
After heavy rainfall, the three separate water streams merge into a single wide cascade that appears like a thick water curtain. This rare occurrence happens only after intense downpours and completely transforms the appearance of the site.
