Piedalbona

Piedalbona is a medieval hilltop settlement in Istria built across elevated terrain with stone houses and narrow winding paths. These lanes lead to viewpoints overlooking the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding hills.

The settlement grew from ancient foundations into a strategic position under Venetian rule between the 15th and 18th centuries. Its hilltop location was important for controlling the region during this period of foreign dominance.

Visitors arrive through a network of country roads connecting to major routes in the region. The journey is best managed by car, though roads can be narrow and winding in places.

Numerous cellars are carved into the hillside, maintaining cool temperatures throughout the year. These underground spaces were traditionally used to store wine and olive oil, making them a distinctive feature of the place.
