Zöld Cave, Cave in Budakalász, Hungary.
Zöld Cave is a natural cave on the eastern side of Nagy-Kevély mountain in the Pilis Mountains, approximately 100 meters from an old limestone quarry. The cave entrance leads into a system containing layers from different time periods that has been examined by archaeologists.
The cave was visited by hunters during the Pleistocene and shows occupation traces from the late Ice Age. Excavations in 2002 uncovered objects from the Bronze Age, Roman period, and Middle Ages.
Research teams continue to study the cave, examining Holocene deposits and investigating evidence of human activities dating back to the late Ice Age period.
The cave is reached by following a green marked trail from the quarry rest area, heading west and then uphill on an unmarked path. Sturdy footwear and careful footing on the rough ground are advised.
Stone tools and cut marks on reindeer and horse bones show the site was used as a temporary hunting place between 18,000 and 12,000 years ago. Such finds provide rare insights into how Ice Age hunters worked in this region.
