Castle of Eger

The Castle of Eger is a constructed replica set in the Pilis hills near Pilisborosjenő, displaying stone walls and fortification structures typical of medieval Hungarian strongholds. The ruins reflect architectural patterns of traditional defensive fortresses from centuries past.

This replica was built in the 1960s to serve as a filming location for a motion picture about a siege. The construction brought to life a structure meant to represent how medieval defenses once functioned.

This replica honors the original Castle of Eger's legacy, where Hungarian defenders successfully resisted Turkish invaders during the significant 1552 siege.

The site sits among the hills north of Budapest and is reachable through hiking paths that wind through the area. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear and plan time to explore the ruins and surrounding landscape comfortably.

The ruins were preserved in their film-set condition rather than fully restored to authentic medieval form. This makes them an unusual reminder of Hollywood-style productions that took shape in this Hungarian region.
