Haluza

Haluza is an archaeological site in the Negev Desert that contains the remains of an ancient settlement built around trade and later religion. Stone structures, foundations, and streets are scattered across the landscape, showing where houses, public buildings, and religious spaces once stood.

The settlement began as a Nabataean trading post and grew into a prosperous hub along spice trade routes. Centuries later, it transformed into an important Christian city during the Byzantine period before eventually being abandoned.

The place shows layers of different periods living side by side, from the time when merchants traded spices to when Christians built their churches here. You can walk through the remains and see how the settlement shifted from a busy trading hub to a religious center over the centuries.

The site is accessible on foot through walking paths, and visitors should bring water and sun protection as the open desert location offers little shade. Guided tours are helpful for understanding the layout and learning details about what has been discovered.

The site contains remains of a theater structure, showing that residents here enjoyed entertainment and cultural gatherings. This is an unexpected feature for a desert settlement and reveals the prosperity and cosmopolitan character of the ancient community.
