Mahant Ghasidas Museum Raipur

The Mahant Ghasidas Museum is an archaeological museum in Raipur with five galleries filled with finds from ancient sites, anthropological objects, and specimens from the natural world. The collections also feature inscriptions and tribal artifacts from across Chhattisgarh.

The museum was founded in 1875 by Raja Mahant Ghasidas of Rajnandgaon to preserve the region's history. It moved to its current building in 1953, marking a new chapter in how the collections were shared with the public.

The galleries show stone carvings, copper plates, and ancient coins that reflect the crafts and artistic traditions of the region. You can see how people here lived and worked through the objects they left behind.

The museum is centrally located in Raipur and open to visitors year-round, though December through February offers the most comfortable weather for exploring. Plan time to walk through each gallery at a relaxed pace without feeling rushed.

One of the oldest dated objects in the collection is a wooden pillar from the second century BC found near Kirari. This rare wooden artifact shows how skilled ancient craftspeople were in this area.
