Maitri Baagh Zoo, Zoo and recreational park in Bhilai, India.
Maitri Baagh Zoo is a 111-acre facility in Bhilai housing more than 30 animal species including Bengal tigers, sambar deer, and various bird species within landscaped grounds. The animal enclosures blend into natural gardens connected by walking paths and open lawns.
The zoo was founded in 1972 through a partnership between India and the Soviet Union during a period of strong diplomatic cooperation. A Soviet leader visited in its early years and took part in symbolic tree planting ceremonies on the grounds.
The name comes from the Sanskrit word for friendship, chosen to honor diplomatic ties when it opened. Visitors today see this reflected in how the grounds blend gardens with animal habitats in a way that emphasizes connection rather than separation.
The pathways throughout the park are easy to walk and there are shaded rest areas with benches placed along the routes. Allow at least a couple of hours to see the different animal enclosures at a comfortable pace.
A musical fountain operates on the artificial lake on weekends, creating water and light displays. The small toy train called Maitrey Express runs through the grounds and provides a different way to view the park.
