Bhilai, Industrial city in Durg district, India
Bhilai is an industrial city in Chhattisgarh state that developed along the Shivnath River. The city sits at roughly 1480 feet (450 meters) elevation and forms an important urban center in the Durg region.
In the 1950s a large steel plant was built here with Soviet assistance, transforming a small settlement into a growing city. The factory began production in 1959 and shaped the economic development of the entire region.
The name Bhilai originates from the indigenous Bhil tribe, who inhabited the surrounding forests and shaped the regional heritage through generations.
The city is accessible via National Highway 53 and several railway stations on the Howrah-Mumbai line. Raipur International Airport is about 31 miles (50 kilometers) away and offers connections to larger cities.
The steel plant produced rails for the Indian railway network and supplied construction projects across the country for decades. The industrial facilities still shape the cityscape and local economy today.
