Bambleshwari Temple, Hindu temple in Dongargarh, India
Bambleshwari Temple is a Hindu shrine on a hilltop in Dongargarh, Chhattisgarh state. The main hall housing the goddess sits at the summit and can be reached by a long stone stairway or a cable car running from the plain below.
The shrine was built more than two millennia ago when King Virsen received a son after prayers to Shiva and Durga. Later rulers and pilgrims ensured the site remained active and expanded over time.
The name derives from Bambha, an ancient ruler who showed devotion to the goddess, and his descendants continued to care for the shrine. Pilgrims often bring red cloths and flower garlands, which they tie to the steps and railings, making the ascent look like a colorful path.
Entry is free, and visitors choose between climbing the steps or taking the cable car. Those who opt for the stairs should bring water and go early in the morning or after sunset, when it is cooler.
Besides the main shrine on the summit, there is a second Bambeshwari shrine on the plain, so visitors can experience both locations. Some pilgrims begin their journey below and pray at both stations.
