Akal Wood Fossil Park

Akal Wood Fossil Park, Geological monument in Jaisalmer, India

Akal Wood Fossil Park is a geological site near Jaisalmer that displays numerous petrified tree trunks embedded in rocky terrain and protected by iron cages. An entrance museum houses photographs and information about these ancient specimens, offering visitors a clear view of how the wood has turned to stone over millions of years.

The site was designated as a National Geological Monument by the Geological Survey of India in 1972. Management and care of this geological site passed to the Rajasthan Forest Department thirteen years later.

This place tells the story of a dramatic change in the landscape over millions of years. Visitors walking among the fossils can sense how this region transformed from a forested land into the desert it is today.

The park is located about 17 kilometers from Jaisalmer along a main highway and is open to visitors throughout the day. Wear comfortable walking shoes since the ground is rocky and uneven, and you may want to explore several areas on foot.

The largest petrified wood specimen stretches about 13 meters in length, showing visitors just how massive the ancient trees of this region once were. Alongside the wood, you can find fossils of ancient snail shells, evidence that water and aquatic life once existed here.
