Miankaleh, Biosphere reserve in Mazandaran Province, Iran
Miankaleh is a peninsula stretching roughly 48 kilometers into the Caspian Sea, covering wetlands, forests, and coastal areas that provide habitat for many plants and animals. The landscape changes from shallow marshes near the shore to deeper water and forested sections inland.
The peninsula gained recognition as a Ramsar Wetland in 1975, protecting about 68,000 hectares of land between Gorgan Bay and the Caspian Sea. This international designation marked the start of formal conservation efforts in the area.
Four traditional villages on the peninsula keep old fishing methods alive, passed down through generations and showing how people here live sustainably with nature.
An ecological research station on the site monitors migratory birds and marine ecosystems throughout the year. Visitors should explore the area with local guides to help protect the sensitive natural spaces.
The area participates in a program aimed at bringing Siberian tigers back to the region through careful breeding and protection strategies. This makes it a key location for saving this endangered species.
