Jameh Mosque of Gorgan, Historical mosque in Nalbandan Bazaar area, Iran

The Jameh Mosque of Gorgan is a building with a central courtyard surrounded by four porches and smaller chambers arranged in symmetrical balance. A distinctive minaret with Kufic script rises above the complex, displaying the craftsmanship of past periods.

The building was founded in 1018 and repeatedly remodeled and expanded over many centuries. Each phase of the Seljuk, Timurid, Safavid, and Afsharid periods left traces in its structure.

The mosque displays layers of Iranian Islamic artistry that become visible as you walk through it. The tile patterns and inscriptions on the walls tell the story of different periods that shaped this place.

The building stands next to the historic bazaar and is easily reached on foot. Visitors should dress appropriately and remember that it remains an active place of prayer.

The prayer hall faces east, indicating it was originally built for Sunni worship. This is uncommon in Iran, where Shia mosques are the standard.
