Mehrabad International Airport, International airport in District 9, Tehran, Iran.
Mehrabad is a working airport in District 9 of Tehran that now serves routes throughout Iran. The facility uses two parallel runways that allow operations around the clock.
The facility opened in 1938 and served for many years as a stopover for flights heading east across Asia. After 2004 international traffic shifted to another airport in the city.
The facility marked a turning point in Iranian history when Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned from exile through its gates in February 1979.
Four terminals are in service, with most airlines operating from Terminals 1 and 2. The terminals sit close together and signs help travelers navigate between them.
Despite operating exclusively domestic flights since 2004, Mehrabad remains one of Iran's busiest airports with over 12 million annual passengers.
