Eram Zoo, Zoological garden in District 5, Tehran, Iran.
Eram Zoo is a zoological park inside Eram Amusement Park in District 5 of Tehran, housing around 290 animal species. These include Persian leopards, tigers, and chimpanzees, representing animals from a wide range of climates and habitats.
The zoo opened in 1992 after moving from its former location at Doshan Tappeh, on the eastern side of Tehran. This move continued a long tradition of animal exhibitions in the city that dates back to the Qajar period.
The zoo sits inside a large amusement park, which gives it a character unlike most standalone facilities, as families move easily between rides and animal enclosures. Persian leopards tend to draw the most attention from visitors, and keepers regularly share information about the animals near their enclosures.
The zoo is easy to reach from the main highway on the western side of Tehran, making it a convenient stop for visitors coming from the city center. Since it sits inside an amusement park, it is worth planning extra time to explore both areas during your visit.
The zoo took part in an exchange program in which Persian leopards were traded for Siberian tigers intended for release on the Miankaleh Peninsula. This arrangement shows that the facility plays a role beyond display, contributing to efforts to return animals to the wild.
