Roccaraso, Mountain resort in L'Aquila Province, Italy
Roccaraso is a commune in L'Aquila Province within the Abruzzo region, sitting at 1236 meters above sea level. The settlement spreads across several hamlets and is surrounded by Apennine peaks, with ski areas and lift infrastructure nearby.
A small settlement of herders and craftspeople formed here near the end of the tenth century along the Rasinus stream. Over the centuries the village grew into a trade point among the Abruzzo mountains.
Both churches remain active centers of local faith and visitors often stop to see their interiors during a walk through town. The dedication to San Rocco recalls the protection sought from plague centuries ago.
The town can be reached by car from Rome via the A25 motorway, exiting at Sulmona-Pratola Peligna. Train and bus links offer further options for visitors without their own vehicle.
The hamlet of Pietransieri was awarded the Gold Medal of Military Valour after its total destruction in World War II. This honor recalls the resistance shown by its inhabitants during harsh times.
