Francavilla al Mare, Coastal commune in Abruzzo, Italy
Francavilla al Mare is a commune in the Province of Chieti in Abruzzo that stretches along the Adriatic coast. The shoreline features numerous beach establishments and a promenade linking residential neighborhoods to the waterfront.
In 1162, the settlement received a twelve-year tax exemption, leading to its name Francavilla, which translates to free town in Italian. This exemption encouraged the development of the settlement during the medieval period.
The Michetti Museum preserves artworks and artifacts that represent the local heritage, including collections from the literary circle of Francesco Paolo Michetti. Housed in a former convent, the museum displays the artistic and literary movements that shaped this coastal region.
The central train station provides direct connections to Pescara and Rome, while the coastal road offers access to neighboring beaches and towns. The promenade is suitable for walking and connects several beach areas together.
The commune maintains several buildings from different periods, including the restored Sirena Palace and the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. Sirena Palace now hosts public exhibitions and combines modern use with historical architecture.
