Carpi, Commune in Province of Modena, Italy
Carpi is a town in the Province of Modena, located about 20 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital. The plain sits at an elevation of 28 meters and is crossed by farmland and residential districts that spread out from the historic core.
The medieval settlement became the seat of the Pio family in the 14th century, who expanded and fortified the territory. Their rule shaped the town over several centuries and ended only in the early modern period.
The name comes from the Latin word carpinus, meaning hornbeam, which points to the forested land that once covered this area. Today the streets around Piazza dei Martiri with their long arcades show how people walk and shop in the shade.
The SETA public transport lines run to different districts, and the train station offers connections to the regional network. Many destinations in the center can be reached on foot, as distances remain manageable.
A falcon perched on a hornbeam tree appears on the town emblem and recalls a legend about the Lombard King Astolfo. This connection to the early medieval ruler remains visible today in the public symbols of the town.
